How to Get Your First DUPR Rating in Hong Kong
Getting your first DUPR rating is free and only requires one verified match. Most new players start as NR (Not Rated) and receive their first number after that match is processed.
If you’re new to rated play in Hong Kong, this guide walks you through exactly how it works and the fastest ways to get a reliable rating.
What Is a DUPR Rating?
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is the most widely used rating system in pickleball. It measures your skill level on a scale from 2.000 to 8.000 based on real match results.
New players begin as NR. Once you log a match, the system assigns your first rating based on the result and the ratings of the players you faced.
For a full explanation of how the scale works, see our guide: What is DUPR?
How to Get Your First DUPR Rating
Follow these three steps:
- Create a free DUPR account
Download the DUPR app or go to dupr.com and sign up. Search first to make sure you don’t already have an account from a previous tournament. - Play and log one match
The match can be self-reported or submitted by a club or tournament. - Wait for your rating
Your first rating usually appears about a week after your first result is verified.
You Start as NR — Not 2.0 or 3.0
Everyone begins as NR. The algorithm has no data on you yet, so it places you after your first match based on:
- Who you played against
- The score
- Whether the match was verified
Winning against higher-rated players usually results in a higher starting number. Losing heavily can place you lower.
Ways to Get Your First Rating
| Method | How It Works | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Self-report a match | Enter the score in the app. Your opponent confirms by email. | Fastest |
| Play a club session | Join a club that reports results to DUPR. | Higher |
| Play a rated tournament | The organiser submits the results. | Higher |
| DUPR coach evaluation | A certified coach rates you in person or via video. | By availability |
Self-reported recreational matches count, but club and tournament matches carry more weight and help your rating stabilise faster.
Why Is My First DUPR Rating Low?
A low first rating is very common. Here’s why:
- The system has almost no data on you.
- The median DUPR rating is around 3.3.
- Most new players land in the high 2s or low 3s.
Your rating is also most volatile in the first 10–20 matches. Early numbers are provisional (often shown with an asterisk) while the algorithm gathers more information.
How to Get an Accurate Rating Faster
- Log 10–20 matches against varied opponents.
- Prioritise verified matches (club nights or tournaments) over pure self-reported games.
- Play competitively and enter accurate scores.
- Avoid playing the exact same partner repeatedly if you want the system to learn your true level.
At 212HK, we run regular DUPR sessions (including DUPR Saturday and DUPR Mondays). These are ideal for getting clean, verified results onto your profile.
